The Story

One ride out the road.
Two decades of stories.
Courtney rolling her eyes.

Veteran Juneau tour guide Tom Skinner and his no-nonsense sixteen-year-old daughter Courtney — the official Truth Teller riding shotgun — take you on one nonstop ride “out the road,” from the cruise-ship dock to the foot of Mendenhall Glacier. You'll meet Captain Chuckles, Bear-Bait Bobby, and Denise from Arizona in row two; hear how Joe Juneau bought the town with a round of drinks, the black wolf named Romeo who just wanted to play, the Birdman of Juneau, and the glacier that looks peaceful — until it bites back.

“Some are true. Some are mostly true. And some are gloriously full-of-shit tall tales.”
— The only honest warning label in Alaska

The Author

Tom & Courtney Skinner

Fifteen-plus years of driving Alaska's visitors to the glacier and back gave Tom the stories. Courtney, riding shotgun since she was a kid, keeps him honest — that's her official job, on the cover and in life. Juneau, Alaska.

Fresh off the press.

Just published from Juneau. If you read it, a few honest words on Amazon help a small press more than you'd think — and this is where they'll live.

Read the opening.

Chapter One — Welcome Aboard

Welcome aboard, everybody. My name is Tom. I'll be your tour guide today. The lady to my right, that's my sixteen-year-old daughter Courtney. She's in charge. I'm just here to drive and tell stories.

I'd like to welcome you to the largest capital city in the United States, land-wise. Juneau, Alaska. And here's something a lot of people don't realize — excluding Hawaii, which I've never been to, this is the only city in the United States where you have to buy a ticket just to get here. No roads in, no roads out. You either fly in or you come by boat, like most of you just did. That's it. You literally cannot drive here.
