The Story

Twelve winters alone —
and one story that changes everything.

Trapper Tom has spent twelve hard winters alone with seven dogs that once stared down the wrong end of a rifle — content with the long quiet, until a story reaches him at a remote trading post. Far north, a whippersnapper from Virginia has built a cabin between two boulders, walked a half-wolf killer off its chain like a kitchen dog, and now runs fourteen huskies three hundred miles from the nearest soul. For the first time in years, something stirs in Tom's chest.

“In the frozen heart of the Yukon, one man's solitude is about to crack.”

The Author

Thomas P. Skinner

Tom Skinner drove a Southeast Alaska tour bus long enough to learn that every story has three versions, and has been telling the other two ever since. He writes Alaska the way it actually is — hard, quiet, and shot through with the things men carry and never say. Companion to Tales of a Trapper.

The Companion Book

Fresh off the press.

Just published from Juneau. If you read it, a few honest words on Amazon help a small press more than you'd think — and this is where they'll live.

Read the opening.

Chapter One — The Rumor

The trading post sat hunched against the wind like an old man who'd forgotten how to stand straight. Trapper Tom pushed through the door and let it slam behind him. Snow blew in sideways before the latch caught and the wind gave up trying to follow him inside. He stamped his boots on the rough plank floor, loosening the crust of ice that had built up on the soles during the last three miles. The stomping sent dry flakes skittering across the boards toward the potbellied stove in the corner, where they vanished with a soft hiss.

The place smelled the way every trading post in the territory smelled. Woodsmoke baked into the logs so deep you couldn't tell where the wall ended and the smoke began. Wet wool drying near the stove. Tobacco from three different pipes going at once.
